Where in Cornwall can you find a mysterious Russian, Napoleonic soldiers, a schoolgirl detective and a victim of religious mania?

Come and find out on magical theatre walks in Redruth’s historic St Euny churchyard from 18-21 May.

Fascinating characters, at rest in the grounds of the ‘Mining Church’ will be brought to life by a new community company, Perthi Kov (Cornish for ‘remember’) that combines the talents of some of Cornwall’s most exciting theatre markers, writers, musicians and actors.

St Euny, as the Miners’ Church, is the resting place of many who made their living in the mines and associated industries. Among the characters we will restore to life for performance are a mining engineer and agent who travelled to Cuba, and miners who travelled with their families to Australia and Colorado. The audience will also meet the managing partner of the Penhallick fuse works, which served the mining industry, a young bal maiden whose hard life led to tragedy, and a mining engineer whose time in Mexico was celebrated every year in his Gwennap home. Together, their stories reflect the drama, adventure and risk of the mining industry through the nineteenth century, both for the workers and their families.

Sue Hill (of WildWorks and Kneehigh) leads a company including writers Anna Maria Murphy, Mercedes Kemp and Tamsin Spargo, and actors including Rebecca Hulbert, Scary Little Girls’ Shazz Andrew, and members of Story Republic. New music has been commissioned from Claire Ingleheart and Hilary Coleman.  The Ingleheart Singers join the Red River Singers in the performances.

Guides will take audience members on a 75 minute journey to meet extraordinary characters in the shadow of Carn Brea, and to travel through time and across the globe, as the residents recall their lives. A mix of professional and community performers will bring to life an idea brought back from Georgia, USA by Redruth-based Sally Smith.  An exhibition of Perthi Kov’s research, and creative work with community groups, will be in the church to explore, with refreshments, after the show.

The character-led tours depart every 20 minutes, 6pm-7.40pm daily Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun, plus 2pm-3.40pm on Sat and Sun.

Tickets (£8/£6) are available through Cornish Riviera Box Office now and must be booked in advance as numbers are limited.
